About: Tanner Architecture

Tanner Architecture is an enthusiastic and friendly architecture practice based in Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

The practice was established by architect, Paul Tanner, as a natural progression following more than twenty years’ experience of designing and managing the successful delivery of building projects across London, the south east and further afield.

The practice prides itself on its commitment to listening to and understanding client ambitions for their projects and to the role we play in delivering projects that exceed those original expectations.

We know that good design is a crucial first step towards a building's success and the end users' experience remains at the forefront of our approach to the design and delivery of good buildings; from concept through to completion. We have the experience, expert technical knowledge and communication, coordination and management skills that ensure that good ideas are realised as good places for people to live, learn, work, rest and play.

The buildings we design always look to the unique characteristics of the site as the starting point for proposals. We look to exploit views, provide natural light and ventilation and to adopt natural building materials wherever possible. However, our philosophy is that a building can only truly be considered sustainable when it has won the affection of those who use and experience it. This means ensuring that they are designed to function well but also include 'delight' in how they are experienced.

Building projects depend upon the efforts of a considerable number of specialist and non-specialist contributors. The reputation we have gained for our contribution and collaboration is reflected in the feedback received from many of those with whom we have worked.

About: Paul Tanner

Principal : Chartered Architect
Paul Tanner

Practice founder, Paul, is an award-winning chartered architect who knows how lucky he is to love what he does for a living!

After studying at Brighton University, Paul moved to London where he worked for the next 14 years. Initially specialising in school building design, he designed the first school in Kent to be completed with a 'green' (sedum) roof. He soon established himself as a 'Project Architect' with a good reputation for understanding the technical aspects of building design, construction detailing and specification and for working well with building contractors.

Seeking to diversify his experience, Paul then moved to a practice that specialised in primary and mental healthcare buildings. After completing a very large primary care centre in north London, his design for a pair of mental health care units in Hertfordshire won a Building Better Healthcare Award. His Learning Disabilities Unit in Norfolk also received awards.

However, he soon discovered a particular enjoyment and enthusiasm for designing and delivering residential accommodation and this has since become a major focus of his work. He co-designed a 167 apartment building in Southwark and designed several more smaller apartment buildings.

Following a move to Tunbridge Wells, Paul eventually put an end to his daily commute to London and began work more locally. Recent years have seen the completion of several apartment buildings and houses as well as an enormously successful rugby club facility in Dartford.

Paul lives in Tunbridge Wells with his wife, two children and an all-too-regularly fluctuating number of chickens.
